You Are Not What You Own

Since all those US, UK, SWISS brands have anchored their ships in India; it becomes a trend to wear cloths with the brands logo splashed all over. And people are floating over there because people start believing that it creates a higher identity for them.

Think, if you have to depend on brand to create your identity, then what the real identity you own? Free yourself by what you buy or what logo you splashed on your cloths. Of course some people will argue sometimes what we posses also create an identity for us. I’d say, “Yes, sometimes but it’s not authentic identity.” Our true identity lies in our values and the way we treat people, not in possessing goods.

A person’s true identity literally becomes an outfit and there’s nothing cool about that. Let your actions speak what you believe in, not those cool messages on your “Tee.” Yes dear, define yourself by the things you can’t buy but still you can posses.

You can’t buy an identity.
You can’t buy a class.
You can’t buy superiority.

Only one thing you can buy—a FALSE BELIEF that people respect you by the stuffs you posses.

Hello Roy.

I agree with everything you said. I'm not a brand person and I feel I'm way better off than some of my friends who are like slaves to brands and fashion trends. They're so self-conscious whether they are "in" or not. Simplicity offers peace, doesn't it? One knows one'w self-worth.

Ah lovely idea you've written about. I could just go on and on and on, but I let you do all the talking :D

This was a nice read :) Kudos!

yup true. id rather get 5 tees of the street than blow my budget in a provogue or a nike hoodie. but that aint for sportspersons is it? i mean u just expect a utd player to be in a red jersey branded by aig n nike. thats what made them famous isnt it? i guess but people shudnt follow em blindly . umm i hope this made sense

I was never a brand freak....as long as I'm wearing something I can configure to make me look good and i carry myself well, how does it matter ?

And in way like Mehreen said, pp get enslaved to barnds, like their lives will move around what brands the parts of thei body cling to. Its sad.

Nice read. Glad you brought up sucha topic.

totally agree with you Roy, me too sympathise with these brand slaves, specially here in Dubai they are plenty around me, gosh dont get me start on it,after spending 11yrs in a simple place like NewZealand this place really seems like such a show off to me, I am trying very hard to survive in that matter...

I do sometimes buy brand stuff but not cos I wanna be in some sorta race but if I really like what I see and wanna have it.

nice but short post :)

@ Mehreen—

Exactly! You know what, to me, it’s quality that matters most, I don’t care what’s the logo on it. If it’s Reebok, or if I got the same quality somewhere else, I won’t mind to buy the other one too.

Hmmm, you know, to make a conversation we both need to talk, not just me or you, right? :)

@ SpicyMist—

Yes, we should follow our instinct.

Following celebrity for style statement is really losing the biggest identity. But some people feel proud of that, you know, ultimately we are human.

So what’s your favorite – “fashion street” or “link road (bandra)?”

@ Cindy—

Liked this one: “something I can configure to make me look good and i carry myself well.”

And it should be. Its all about how you carry yourself, anytime, anywhere. Nice to know that you liked it. Thank you!

@ Sadiya—

:) : )
Yes, Dubai is really showing off the world, how to show off. Recently I read an article how in the 10 years they hv changed their architect-oh my goodness.

Yeah, short post. You can’t believe, last 15 days I’m sorta sinking in project load. My bad luck, I can’t pass my work to somebody else too. It’ll go till Jan. Chalo next post would be BIG. Take care!

well, that's right, what we own is not us. But, we should own something, right?
Now a days, we can buy respect, or at least false respect by what we own. If you are going to a hotel in a luxurious car, I bet you'll get preference over someone just walking in. Every thing has it's value, even things that we own, but has its limits. If we don't get obsessed, we know where to draw the line.
